As of my last knowledge update in September 2021, the best Windows operating system for modern computers would be Windows 10. It is a well-established and widely used OS that offers a balance of performance, compatibility, and security. Windows 10 was released in 2015 and received regular updates and improvements over the years, making it suitable for a wide range of hardware configurations.

Here are some reasons why Windows 10 is considered the best choice for modern computers:

1. **Hardware Compatibility:** Windows 10 is designed to work seamlessly with a broad range of modern hardware components, including the latest processors, graphics cards, and peripherals.

2. **Performance Optimization:** Windows 10 includes numerous performance optimizations, making it faster and more efficient compared to its predecessors.

3. **DirectX 12 Support:** Windows 10 is the only version of Windows that supports DirectX 12, a graphics API that can significantly improve gaming performance and visuals on compatible hardware.

4. **Regular Updates and Support:** Microsoft provides regular updates and security patches for Windows 10, ensuring that your system remains up-to-date and protected from vulnerabilities.

5. **Cortana Integration:** Windows 10 integrates Microsoft’s digital assistant, Cortana, which provides helpful voice-activated features and search capabilities.

6. **Enhanced Security Features:** Windows 10 includes various security features like Windows Defender Antivirus, Windows Firewall, and built-in ransomware protection to keep your system secure.

7. **Universal Windows Platform (UWP) Apps:** Windows 10 introduced the Universal Windows Platform, allowing developers to create apps that work across multiple devices, providing a consistent user experience.

8. **Continuum Mode:** For 2-in-1 devices like tablets with detachable keyboards, Continuum mode automatically switches between tablet and desktop modes, optimizing the user interface accordingly.

9. **Microsoft Store:** Windows 10 includes the Microsoft Store, where you can find a variety of apps, games, and utilities that are optimized for the OS.

10. **Microsoft Edge:** Windows 10 introduced the Edge browser, which offers improved performance and features compared to its predecessor, Internet Explorer.

Please note that operating system preferences and requirements may change over time, and newer versions of Windows may have been released since my last update. Always consider the latest offerings from Microsoft and check for any hardware or software compatibility requirements before choosing an operating system for your modern computer.
